In a major boost to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)'s COVID-19 diplomacy, Ambassadors and envoys from a hundred nations are set to visit the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) and Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Limited (GBL) facilities on coming 4 December, reports Times of India.
The said visit was earlier meant to take place on 27 November. However, the same has now been rescheduled.
Furthermore, as per Pune's Divisional Commissioner Saurab Rao, it is possible that Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi would also be visiting the city. PM Modi's possible visit would be aimed at reviewing the status of the vaccine candidate for COVID-19 and to learn about its launch, production and distribution mechanisms.
It should be noted that so far, the Central Drug Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has granted licence permission for manufacturing of the COVID-19 vaccine for the pre-clinical test, examination and analysis to seven firms, which include SII and GBL.
Of the two, SII also happens to be the world's largest vaccine maker. It has partnered with AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford to manufacture their vaccine candidate called Covishield.
