Sonia Gandhi chose Manmohan Singh to be the PM because he posed no threat to Rahul Gandhi, Barack Obama writes in his memoir.

Former US president Barack Obama’s memoir A Promised Land has kicked up a storm across the globe as his observances about his interactions with leaders of different countries have provided political fodder to many.

A Promised Land, released on Tuesday, covers the first term of Obama as the US president during 2008-12. In his memoir, while Obama has remembered Manmohan Singh Indian Prime Minister at the time fondly as a “man with uncommon wisdom”, he has also mentioned that Singh owed his position to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

In his book, Barack Obama has said that Sonia Gandhi picked him to be the PM because he posed no threat to her son Rahul Gandhi, whom she was grooming to be her heir.

“(Singh) owed his position to Sonia Gandhi... More than one political observer believed that she’d chosen Singh precisely because as an elderly Sikh with no national political base, he posed no threat to her ... son Rahul, whom she was grooming to take over the Congress party,” Obama says in the book.

Reacting to Obama’s remark, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra took a dig at Rahul Gandhi and claimed that he was responsible for his own failure.

“Obama says, Manmohan Singh got the post of PM from Sonia Gandhi as he posed no THREAT to “Rahul Gandhi”. I am a firm believer of the fact that NO ONE other that Rahul himself is a threat to Rahul!! It’s Rahul who has finished Rahul!! (sic)” Sambit Patra said on Twitter.
